Referred as Brazilian Sign Language, or Libras, is a visual/gesture language with vocabulary, grammar, idioms, and syntax different from Brazilian Portuguese. Libras is the language of the Brazilian deaf communities. In 24th of April, 2002, Libras became an official language in Brazil. The Law number 10.436 recognizes Libras as the language of the Brazilian deaf communities.
The DVD brings 373 video clips of basic types of manual communication to converse in Libras phrases, expressions, sentence and questions, which come up in everyday conversation. There are 11 video lessons in the DVD. Signs (words and sentences) are briefly shown in the screen along with both Portuguese and English subtitles.
The material brings sufficient vocabulary to permit reasonable communication with Brazilian deaf persons. The lessons cover finger spelling, numbers, common phrases, and specialized signs such as the alphabet, numbers, greetings, family members, transport, house objects, clothing, nature, places in Brasilia, time, days, week, months, food and drinks, colors, jobs, etc. Following the lessons there are dialogues with deaf persons using the presented vocabulary.
